Lessons in Unseelie Discipline by Hazel Jonas

2/5 stars

I loved the idea of Lorne and Sara, but I don’t feel it was executed properly. A lot of their major relationship milestones seemed to happen outside of the book, so it felt like I couldn’t get as attached to then as I wanted to.

I don’t have a single concept of what this world is like. It’s almost like I missed n entire book that explained the basics of the world and how society works. I don’t really understand much of what a Seelie or an Unseelie is, and I don’t have a good grasp of what Sara is capable of. The stuff with her parents seemed to come out of nowhere and it didn’t really hit me much because it didn’t feel cohesive. The whole time I was reading, I was so desperate for a crumb of information to make everything fit together, and I don’t feel I really got that.

Sara’s relationships with her friends seemed a bit off as well. They were supposed to be this really tight group of troublemakers but at times it almost seemed like they were strangers to Sara. I didn’t really get how any of them were friends, to be honest. They didn’t jive well together at all.

I really wanted to like Lessons in Unseelie Discipline, but there were too many inconsistencies with the plot and the characters for me to really fall in love with this.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
