City of Blood and Bone by Elana Gomel

3/5 stars

City of Blood and Bone has an interesting premise. I’m a little rough on the details, but some sort of space travel, X-Web, was found or invented that allows people to use cyber implants in their brain to travel to planets that would sustain life. Ruth and her crew take a trip to Gliese 512B, and things quickly spiral out of control.

I wish that I knew more about the worlds that Elana built in this. I don’t really know much about the sort of society that the characters come from, or even what year it is. I’m not sure how old they are, where they come from, or what brought them together on SilkRoad. I’d love to see this fleshed out a little more and really expand the setting here.

The characters were a little one note. They all judged each other during their POV points and were pretty much strictly defined by their careers. I found myself wanting to know more about them and what kind of people they are. Why were they together if none of them liked each other? How did they know so quickly about the Captain being off if they’d only been together a few days? What were their hobbies and backstories? There are a lot of unanswered questions with these characters.

While I’m a bit middle of the road on this one, I’d definitely read more of the series. I’m curious about the ending and where the story will go from here with these characters.

Thank you to Alyanna for sending me this! Everything in this review is my honest opinion.
