Ember was a bit of a slow start for me, but I ended up falling in love with it by the end. This enemies-to-lovers story features lots of twists, an underdog MMC, and the redemption arc of a lifetime!
I’m just going to come out and say it, but Ember was so unlikable for most of the book. It took me a bit to fully invest in the story because I just couldn’t get behind Ember at all. However, this makes her redemption arc all the sweeter. I found myself quietly rooting for her by the end, and I really applaud Ellen for this. I was absolutely determined to dislike Ember, so for me to completely change my opinion is a testament to Ellen’s skill as an author.
I loved the touch of history in this also. It was heartbreaking to read about the horrible things that were done in the name of righteousness, and I think Ellen did such a good job of showing the impact that these cruel actions had on the families even years after. Booker was so fascinating to read, and his family’s history played a large part in my feelings for him.
I’m a huge fan of Ellen’s work, but this was my first foray into this series. I’m intrigued, and I can’t wait to go back and read the other books! I’m so excited for this to come out in October so everyone can read Ember and Booker’s happily-ever-after!
