Kat Fallons and Breaking into the Romance World

I discovered Kat Fallons in the charity anthology, Love Sick, benefitting The Trevor Project. The anthology released February 14th (it’s absolutely gorgeous, by the way), but I was lucky enough to be on the ARC team, so I got to read it early. Kat’s story, Finding the DJ, was one of my favourite stories in the collection for her ridiculously hot scenes, exciting characters, and the TEASE! This story is her only released work at the moment, but Kat put everyone in the romance world on notice with it!

Please allow me to introduce her to you as one of my favourite new romance authors in the business!

Q: Who has been your biggest supporter(s) throughout your writing career?

A: My friends in and out of the bookish world have been my greatest supporters. They are the ones who convinced me to publish, and I couldn’t be more grateful.

Q: Where do you draw inspiration from in your work?

A: Sometimes random ideas just seem to form when listening to music, putting a story together that works with whatever I’m listening to.

Q: What does it mean to you to be an author?

A: Having this opportunity to just put a story out there has been one of the most gratifying things I’ve done. I’ve always abandoned projects in the middle just with a “no one will like it” attitude. The response to Finding the DJ has been astounding, and I’m so glad that I took the chance.

Q: What is your writing process like? Do you listen to certain music, snack, make loads of phone notes when inspiration randomly strikes, etc.?

A: My writing style is a hot mess. I wrote my first novella off the cuff. Going into writing my first full length novel, I think I’ve tried a little bit of everything. Plotting, trying to get in the zone, etc. Music is a huge help getting into that zone!

Q: Is there a genre or subgenre that you want to explore that you haven’t yet? Conversely, are there any that you’ll never write?

A: I think I’d love to write Paranormal Romance one day, but I want to work my way there.

Q: What has been the hardest part of your career as an author so far?

A: The fear of reaction. It’s why I remain anonymous; there are mean and judgmental people out there. A layer of protection is all I can afford at this time.

Q: What do you consider to be your greatest strength and weakness as an author?

A: I think my knowledge of the book world has been a great help as I’ve debuted Kat Fallons. My time management will always suck…I try, I really do LOL.

Q: Who is on your radar as someone you’d love to work with?

A: Oh crap. Dreaming big! Sierra Simone, Talia Hibbert, Julie Murphy, Olivia Dade.

Q: At some point in our lives, we’ve all heard the negative comments: “You’re not good enough.” “You’ll never make it.” “This is the worst thing I’ve ever seen.” “You don’t belong.” How do you move forward when faced with negativity?

A: Negativity is something that we in society have to live with. We can’t stop someone from stating their opinion, but we get to decide how we let that affect us. Some days are easier than others. I just try to remember, I’m human and it’s natural to be affected by negativity, but no one gets to live rent free in my mind except my characters. Everyone else can, respectfully, get bent.

Q: What advice would you give to women who are wanting to write, especially if it’s something others might perceive as “outside of the norm”?

A: There’s always going to be a hater out in the world, but for every hater, there’s two people who will love and identify in the “outside of the norm”; people who want to feel seen. Maybe your story isn’t so “outside of the norm” after all.

Kat’s first full-length novel, Catching the DJ, is coming in December, and y’all are not ready for Luna, Xavier, and Sebastian! I’ll be on pins and needles the rest of the year, waiting for Kat to give me the next chapter of their story. In the meantime, check out Kat’s website, follow her on Instagram and Facebook, and take a look at Kat’s favourite recent read: Sharp Love by Mandy Muse, MMF, high heat, and fast paced, everything that Kat loves and needs!
