The Woods Be Scary – Jerry Blaze

2 stars

The Woods Be Scary follows Kimberly five years after being the only survivor of the horrific attack that killed her family. Now living with her aunt and uncle, she runs in the woods by their house to help her deal with the trauma. But the woods be scary, and there’s something lurking there waiting for her…

This book had an interesting premise, especially with the supernatural element, but I couldn’t get into it as much as I wanted to. Kimberly’s character wasn’t real deep, so I didn’t really care overly much what happened to her. Her relationship with Pop developed out of nowhere without any sort of context or meaning, and it really threw me off. I get why it was needed as a plot device, but it didn’t make a lot of sense for the relationship to grow like it did.

I think what this story needed was more of it. With it being as short as it is, there just wasn’t enough time to develop the characters and shape the plot coherently. If it was longer, the author could’ve delved into the bits with Pop and who he was, how their relationship developed, etc. As it is, it was too hard for me to fully immerse into the story.
