The Night We Lost Him – Laura Dave

4 stars

I’m not typically a crier, but Laura Dave somehow makes me cry every single time I read one of her books. The Night We Lost Him is an exploration of the forms our grief takes and the ways that we are witnesses to the lives around us. It’s family finding each other, even when it’s too late.

My only real gripe (besides making me cry) as I didn’t get as much suspense as I thought I would for this being a thriller. I didn’t feel any sense of danger to any of the characters; the thrill aspect of the story kind of faded into the background of the emotion. I don’t begrudge that necessarily, but I would’ve liked to see the drama and suspense play a slightly bigger part in the story overall.

I was rather annoyed with myself that I didn’t see Cory’s reveal coming. I had someone different in my mind, but after the reveal, it all made complete sense! Thus, I cursed myself for that going completely over my head! Knowing who she was and who she was to Liam made everything so much deeper. Those two were so perfectly right for each other at all the wrong times, but they made it work for them in the best way that they could.

Thank you to Simon & Schuster, Marysue Rucci Books, and Laura Dave for letting me read this early!
