Our Dead Girlfriend – Jon Athan

4.5 stars

Here I am, another Jon Athan book that I don’t know how to review. I’ve been sitting trying to gather my thoughts for the last several minutes, but the emotions this book has brought up are so overwhelming that I can’t think past them.

This book, more than anything, is SAD. The things that happen to people who deserve absolutely none of it are heartbreaking and more horrifying than anything else could be in this book. And at the hands of a child….it’s a hard thing to think about.

Jon always gives me characters that I can’t help but care about despite their flaws, and he makes it so much worse for me when something brutal inevitably happens to them. Despite reading several of his books, I haven’t seemed to learn my lesson not to get too attached to any of Jon’s characters 😂

And the poor dead girlfriend…Jenny. The sheer delusion that Daniel had for this body and the things he did because of it were insane. Even the thought of my body being desecrated like that after I’ve died has me shuddering in disgust. I wanted to cry with her parents, and I never even knew this character before she was dead!

Mr. Athan, this ARC has reminded me why you’re one of my favourite authors. The unique blend of horror, pity, disgust, and grief that you make me feel with each of your books is beyond anything any other author has been capable of, and I know when I pick up one of yours, I’m in for one of the best reading experiences of my life.

(Kinda mad about that ending, though…..that person really gets a happy ending???? I’m holding out hope they’ll get what’s coming in the sequel!)
