Lake of Secrets – Cassandra O’Sullivan Sachar

3 stars

Boy, was this a slow build. I don’t know if it’s because I’ve never been a big YA person, but I struggled a little bit while reading Lake of Secrets.

It seemed to take a long time to get to the actual plot and thriller parts. I was 100 pages in, and nothing substantial had really happened. When the big reveal happened, it felt like the author had saved all the thriller elements to cram in right at the end. I wanted to see more of that spread across the story.

That being said, I really like Betty and Juan a lot, despite them not being hugely central to the story. They’re both so tragic, and reading their story was heartbreaking in a way I wasn’t expecting. I liked Brian also! He was a great character, even though I felt like his identity was a little confused at times. I didn’t get on overly well with Callie, finding her to be judgmental at times, overly dramatic, and kind of annoying to read.

All in all, Lake of Secrets isn’t a bad read. It certainly has its interesting moments, and there are some really cool story elements. I just didn’t enjoy it as much as I thought I would.
