I’m going to preface this by saying I’ve never seen Deadgirl, so this is my first experience with this story in any form.
I had a hard time reading this book. The alternating Then and Now chapters were jarring to me and really threw off the pace of the story for me. Just as I was getting a handle on the characters and what was going on, the next chapter would be a different timeline, and I’d have to reacquaint myself with the characters and that time. While effective in invoking emotions towards Ivy, it just didn’t do it for me overall.
I will, however, give Bridgett props for making me feel far more emotion than I was anticipating. Learning the truth of Deadgirl/Ivy makes this story so incredibly sad. It was a difficult read in an entirely different way than I mentioned before, especially knowing that places like the asylum really existed with horrifying secrets kept inside them.
I’m kind of middle of the road with this book. There were parts that had me on the edge of my seat and totally engrossed, and there were parts that didn’t really do it for me. That being said, this is a book that I’ll think about for a very long time.
