This was my first Holly Bloom read, and I’ve gotta say, I don’t think it’ll be my last!
Boy, was this book dark! It explores some very hard topics with anti-heroes who really don’t give a damn outside of getting what they want: their freedom and their little ghost. I’ve read some dark books over the years, but this one was definitely one of the more heavy ones.
My heart bleeds for these characters and everything they went through at the hands of a mad man. While very morally questionable, Aiden, Eli, and Lex had a soft(ish) side that made them such interesting characters to read! I loved getting to know them and seeing different sides of them.
I cottoned onto the twist before it was revealed, but it did another another layer of WTH?? to the depravity of a certain character. However, the aftermath (this is so hard to write without spoiling it!) of the reveal, though, kind of took me out of the story a little bit. A character I was fairly attached to essentially became unimportant in one scene, and it didn’t fit super well for me.
The ending didn’t leave me as satisfied as I wished it had. I feel like our FMC struggled a lot through the whole book, but didn’t get as far as I thought she would. Her situation left me a little deflated at the end, something I’m more accustomed to in other genres, not romance.
Despite the length of this book, I flew through it! It kept me mostly engaged and I’m definitely planning on taking a look at Holly’s other books!
