Yes, feminine rage and revenge! This is a theme I very much can get behind, and the idea of this story was so much fun to read. However…..
….it’s YA.
I’m not a huge YA reader. For the most part, I find it difficult to connect with the characters, and the plot doesn’t seem as buttoned up as I’d like it to be. Maybe I didn’t look closely enough into this book, but I wasn’t expecting it to be a YA, so I had far different expectations for where I thought this book was going.
The romance aspect was cute, but it didn’t feel like it had a lot of substance behind it. Sam and Annie didn’t really know much about each other at all, and didn’t seem like they cared to get to know much about each other. It was a shame because I was really interested in Sam (and the other characters), and I wanted so badly to get to know more about them.
Which brings me to my biggest gripe: inconsistency. I was left with A LOT of questions at the end of this book. What happened to these other characters to make them what they were? What’s so special about Resurrection Peak? What was the significance of the hellhounds, and why did they only show up sometimes and only go after Annie? If the people at Resurrection Peak can go into Hagley and be seen, why are they never mentioned as being around?
This story wasn’t bad necessarily. It has a lot of good bones and a really cool concept; it just didn’t quite go the distance for me.
