Helicopter Parenting in the Age of Drone Warfare – Patrick Barb

3 stars

In an age where drones have made absentee parenting the norm, Zack is an angry young man with something to prove. Tired of the circumstances of life he finds himself in, he sets out to do some damage, forcing his helicopter absent dad to make the worst choice he’ll ever have to make.

This story is really sad and scary in more ways than one. The first being that there could ever be a suggestion of technology that allows someone to keep track of you 24/7, access logs of everything you’ve done, and even see out of your eyes. Big Brother is calling and they want their surveillance back….

The second is reading how a father finds out his son is planning to do something horrible, finally seeing the signs of how troubled and angry he is, and having to act to prevent an unspeakable tragedy. Though I have my own opinions on his very absent parenting, it would be a hard thing to see your kid like that and be forced to accept all the ways you’ve let him down over the years.

I do wish this world was explained a little more. I’m really curious about how all this tech works and how it changed every aspect of society so drastically. I’m a huge tech person so as much as the possibility of Cloud-E Eyes and Parental Drones scare me, it’s absolutely fascinating to think about the tech side of it!
