Blockhead – Edward Spock

2.5 stars

For how short it is, Blockhead has a lot of blood! There aren’t a lot of kills, but each one is over-the-top in classic horror fashion

Tommy’s mom dies when he’s 13 and he’s left with his abusive father. Every October since, he’s visited by a mysterious friend, but this year is going to he different. This year, they’re going to have some fun!

Tommy as a whole felt a little flat to me. I completely understood his vendetta against his dad, but I’m not really sure what he had against the rest of the town. I’m also a little confused on how old he’s supposed to be. I thought maybe he was still a kid, or maybe the lower side of teenager, but if he and Charlie graduated together then that would make him 20ish?

I think this one could’ve benefited from a little more length. That way the characters could be fleshed out more and the plot a little more defined as far as why Tommy decides to do what he does.

All in all, though, I enjoyed how much the author leaned into Halloween, but the whole blockhead as an insult felt a little hokey to me. This would be a good read for anyone looking for a short read in spooky season.
