Parachute by Holly Rae Garcia

4/5 stars

Parachute has left me in a bit of a conundrum. It was deeply unsettling and very disorienting, but I have absolutely no idea what the “big bad” was. So, a conundrum.

Angela and her friends were all about to go their separate ways after high school, so they got together for one last hurrah. Jason had never played Parachute in school, but it was their lucky day that the abandoned elementary school they’re gathered at just so happens to have one. Strange things start to happen, and one by one, the friends are separated.

There’s something about re-exploring the things you loved in your childhood as an adult, and I think Garcia did a really nice job of showing that feeling. The transition time from childhood to adulthood after high school is one of the most confusing times in your life, and Parachute really showed that uncertainty. However, it also showed the consequences of living in the past and being afraid of moving forward in the future.

I thought it was interesting also that each of her characters, while fun and interesting as a group, had some sort of big flaw that ultimately led to their downfall. I’m really curious about what exactly happened to the others and if any of them are even still alive….
