Romancing Mister Bridgerton – Julia Quinn

3/5 stars

So I kind of went into this book with half a vendetta because the show ruined this couple for me. With the whole Whistledown situation in the show, I just can’t get behind Colin and Penelope together, and unfortunately, the book didn’t help.

Colin has always come off as a golden retriever type to me: somewhat excitable, fun, sweet, and charming. This book’s Colin appears to be rather self-centered, arrogant, and spoiled. This was a very poor showing for him, which was really disappointing for me as I’ve always loved this personality.

I didn’t really like his character much in this, and the whole romance with Penelope seemed to happen out of nowhere. He goes from thinking of her as practically another sister to she’s-the-most-beautiful-woman-ever-I-must-marry-her-posthaste with no warning or any real reason for the change. The decision to marry her felt extremely random; I thought their relationship would’ve developed a little more first.

I did think the Whistledown situation was handled a lot better in this book than in the show. The highlight of the whole book was the way Colin chose to reveal the secret. It redeemed him a little bit for me. I’ve been holding off on watching the first part of the new season until I’d read this book, so at least now I can watch and try again to get into this couple…
