SHED – Matthew Salinas

3 stars

SHED follows Ryan, a man being held captive and tortured by a guy convinced Ryan had something to do with his daughter’s death. The only respite he’s allowed is weird dreams with a mysterious figure, but even those aren’t much of a break….

The story as a whole did feel a little abrupt to me. I really wanted more to give me backstory on our two protagonists and to make me feel more for them as I was reading. I will give Salinas massive creativity points, though; the clothes hanger was something. I’m fairly certain I cringed with the finger bit, too.

I liked that God was portrayed as more wrathful and aloof than you typically see in fiction. This was more Sodom and Gomorrah than forgiveness, and it added another layer to the story for me. Ryan’s interactions with the angel provided some relief that was very much needed to break up all the heavy torture.
