Of Trails and Transitions by Thomas Ramseyer

5/5 stars

Of Trails and Transitions is a beautiful study of grief and rediscovering the simple pleasures in life after a great loss. It’s told in the perspective of Isaac Green, a simple man who lost his wife and is finding his way through life after Abby’s loss.

Reading this book was a gentle reminder to enjoy life and appreciate the little things. Even if it’s just the comfort of a pair of cozy socks, the first cold breath of a winter morning, or sighting does in nature; these seemingly small instances are often forgotten or ignored, but are so important and worthy of acknowledging.

I thought the juxtaposition of rustic living with The Shack and sleek modernity with the iPad and mini-fridge was really interesting. It showed the contrast in lifestyles and how smoothly you can integrate both into your life. This contrast also really served to highlight how important it is to take  a breath in life and take some time for yourself. Life is about more than slogging through just to get to the next day of grinding.

Tom did a great job with integrating symbolism into the story and letting the reader connect back to the story on their own. The scene with the fox at the end made me more emotional than I was expecting, and it was a beautifully sentimental way to end Isaac’s story.

This book is full of nostalgia and a wonder for life that isn’t seen often anymore. Of Trails and Transitions was one of the most peaceful books I’ve ever read, and you definitely don’t want to miss out on welcoming these dynamic characters into your life!

Congratulations, Tom, on your debut!
