Teddy – Matt Duchossoy

Five kids discover a weird staircase in the middle of the woods that goes up and just ends in mid-air. Gregg and Jakob can’t help but bully young Teddy, and their callousness brings to life a vendetta that the world is not prepared for.

First of all, can we take a sec and talk about that cover?! What a creepy looking kid! I’m going to need a physical copy of this to stare at me from my bookshelf and horrify me when I catch it in the corner of my eye. That being said, thanks, Matt, for the early look at this!

Teddy gave me mad The Evil Within vibes. I was reading the descriptions of the barbed wire and the abominations and could easily picture them based on character models for The Evil Within. As one of my favourite horror games out there, I was really excited to be able to connect that here! It helped me get a clear picture of what the characters were seeing, as graphic and horrifying as that picture was.

This got real chaotic in the last half of the book, but I suspended my belief in reality and went along for the ride. This proved to be the way to go as I was able to completely immerse into the story and not get bogged down trying to figure out all the minutiae of exactly what was happening. This was such a fun and gore-filled read, and Matt truly is the master of the visceral.

Every book I’ve read of his seems to take a step further than the last, and I can only be excited for what that means as a reader and fan of Matt’s work!
