As much as I enjoy Magnus as a character, a very large part of me wanted to shake him and scream WHAT ARE YOU DOING??????? This guy, I swear, if there’s a semi-bad decision to be made then Magnus is a sure bet to make it.
This book was painfully slow for awhile. It took a long time for it to get where it was going, but McNeill really knocked it out of the park once it got there. He built up a lot of tension and need-to-know that I ended up flying through sections just to hurry and see who would die and who would make it.
I had a bit of a hard time with the timeline of the book as far as what was current vs. the past, pre vs. post Heresy, etc. Maybe it was just me not catching it, but I got a little lost (I am still new to the lore so….). There also seemed to be a lot of info right at the end that I thought maybe could’ve been spread out a bit more or not just dumped in right at the end.
An interesting book overall, though not one of my absolute favourites.
