Jaghatai Khan: Warhawk of Chogoris – Chris Wraight

Jaghatai Khan gave me a new perspective that I have been subconsciously waiting for in all the other primarch books I’ve read: a certain disillusionment toward the Emperor and the Imperial Truth. Most of the primarchs I’ve read seem to just accept the Emperor’s way once they’ve been found and continue on in the Great Crusade, but Jaghatai maintains his independence and doesn’t get swept away in the golden light of the Emperor. It’s a really nice change!

I loved his interactions with his sons, too. Any time he was with his children, it always felt that he genuinely cared for them and treated them as his own, whether they were Chogoran or Terran. Sometimes that sense of comradery and that bond can get lost with his brothers and their children, so this book felt more grounded in a way, and made certain deaths hit harder. And the almost teasing way he and Sanguinius and Magnus relate to each other was an interesting facet to the Khan’s character.

The combat was fantastically written; there were a lot of times where I almost felt like I was charging the hain right alongside Hasik or Gihyun. I liked getting to see more types of combat outside of standard bolt guns and the like.

If I had to complain about anything, it would be that I wish certain things were expanded on a little. Some relationships and experiences were hinted at or introduced but never really followed up on. But otherwise, this was a great read in a series that was starting to feel a little stale.
