Corax: Lord of Shadows by Guy Haley

3 stars

You know, I kind of like Corax. Despite his fairly extreme short-sightedness and choosy application of justice.

Corax started pretty down-to-Earth, for a primarch anyway, in this book but of course, he eventually falls prey to the arrogance of his brothers. He gets so focused on what he feels are personal slights to his beliefs that he loses track of the overarching situation at hand. And, naturally, he’s a primarch and not to be questioned because he knows best….

I thought the bits about Deliverance and Khiavar were pretty cool, and set up for a pretty interesting ending. Corax meets an old friend on his home world who he views as a traitor and it’s not a good conversation at all. Errin fought with Corax years ago to liberate their home world and he tells Corax things he needs to hear but refuses to consider. It’s a good look at how being a primarch tends to cancel out or skew any human emotion the sons of the Emperor have.

Guy Haley isn’t necessarily my favourite Warhammer author. He can get pretty wordy sometimes and it makes for bothersome reading when one sentence is a whole paragraph. Otherwise, this book was a decent read. Very middle of the road, but a nice introduction to Corax for me.
