3/5 stars
Chandler is such a CREEP! I am someone who likes to have their blinds up during the day, and now I’m extremely conscious of the fact that I do so. I’ve never been more thankful that there’s not a house across from mine than I am now. I guess you really don’t know what your neighbours are doing inside their home…
Mine was so good to read. It had the creep factor, and it’s a very good thing that no one could see the faces I was making at my phone as I’m sure they were legendary. However, this book completely lost me in the last couple of chapters. The twist felt random and only added for shock and awe; it really dropped my enjoyment of the book. It felt like going a step backward instead of forward, and things just went downhill from there. In the end, I was left feeling disappointed and underwhelmed as it felt like Chandler was rewarded for all of the things that he did.
Some of these characters didn’t make much sense to me. The ‘clearly a rookie’ cop not noticing anything weird with Chandler and the lack of Kevin (who is also a cop) was strange. If he was fresh out of the Academy, he’d be more alert than anyone because he’d just been trained in what to look for. Chandler was so suspicious that even a blind person could’ve called him out on it. The daycare people were also really odd. They had all these great procedures for picking up the children and then completely disregarded them for extremely flimsy reasons. These procedures are in place for a reason, and just throwing them away like that felt contrived.
I was all set to give this a 5 star as one of the creepiest books I’ve read. Don’t get me wrong, it’s very creepy in the implications that it brings up, but it just fell short in the end. I couldn’t enjoy the book as I had been.
