After how much I loved the Eisenhorn trilogy and Inquisitors as a whole, I was really excited to follow another one (though confused on how that would go considering Ravenor’s circumstances). However, I was a little disappointed by this first book.
Ravenor as a character is hard for me to get behind because he’s kind of an afterthought. The book mainly focuses on his attaché and how they move through worlds under his authority, which….cool. They’re all interesting characters on their own, but I do wish Ravenor was more involved in the story since this trilogy is named after him.
The story felt kind of slow for me. While Abnett is a master at descriptive atmospheres and bringing images to life in the reader’s mind, it wasn’t until the last quarter or so of the book that I really started getting into what was happening. All of the switching between characters and POVs made things a little confusing to follow in places.
I am interested in seeing where Ravenor’s work goes, though, as it felt like Abnett was building towards something big at the end.
